About This Yatra

Bhadrachalam town has a clearly documented history of Lord Sri Rama temple, which was constructed in the 17th Century CE. According to Mythology, the present town was once part of the Dandakaranya forest, which Lord Sri Rama, Sita and Lakshmana had visited during their exile. The jungle which is now in the vicinity of temple was the place for Rama's retreat and a place called Parnasala which is 32 km away was the location where Rama had built a dwelling for himself and Sita. It was here that Sita was abducted by Lanka ruler, Ravana.

The name Bhadrachalam is derived from the word Bhadragiri (The Mountain Abode of Bhadra, the child of Meru and Menaka). The famous temple at Bhadrachalam is home to the Archa Murthy's of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana and their idols are believed to be swayambhu i.e. self-manifested ones.

Places to Visit

Sri Sita Ramachandra Swamy Temple, Bhadrachalam

The famous temple at Bhadrachalam is home to the Archa Murthy's of Rama, Sita and Lakshmana, believed to be Swayambhu (self-manifested). The temple was constructed in the 17th Century CE and shares its historical significance with the Ramayana Era.

Panakala Narasimha Swamy Temple

The God Who Drinks Panakam (Jaggery Water). There is no statue of the god, only a mouth widely opened to 15 cms. When jaggery water is poured into the mouth, a gargling sound is clearly audible as if the Lord is actually drinking it. Even a single ant is not traceable near the Lord in spite of so much jaggery water being offered daily.

Laxmi Narasimha Swamy Temple

At the foot of the hill, the origin of this temple traces to the time of Yudhishtira. The 153 ft. gopuram with 11 storeys is one of the highest in South India. The garland of the Lord with 108 saligramams is of special significance here.

Parnasala

Believed to be the spot where Rama constructed a hermitage during his exile. There is a picturesque display of scenes from vanavasa. Pilgrims can see the footprints of Sita devi, and the mosaic of Mareecha appearing as a golden deer.

Undavalli Caves & Vijayawada

Ancient rock-cut caves on the banks of the Krishna River, connected by a natural cave believed to be used by sages. Vijayawada features the Indrakeeladri hill where Arjuna did penance to obtain the Pasupata weapon from Lord Shiva.
