Significance of Vasant Panchami
Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of spring, the king of all seasons. In the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna declares, "Among seasons, I am the flower-bearing spring" (BG 10.35). This festival is celebrated on the fifth day (Panchami) of the Shukla Paksha of the Magh month, and on this day the autumn season ends as the environment blossoms with the arrival of spring.
This Vasanta Panchami is also known as Sri Panchami and Gyan Panchami. According to astrology, this day is known as Abhuj Muhurat — an auspicious time when any new endeavor can be begun without checking for other auspicious timings.
Worship of Goddess Sarasvati
On Vasant Panchami, the demigoddess Sarasvati, the goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts, is worshipped with great devotion. According to the Puranas, when Lord Brahma created the human species, he was not fully satisfied. At the order of Lord Vishnu, he sprinkled water from his kamandalu, and the Earth began to vibrate. A beautiful four-handed goddess appeared — holding a veena in one hand, a book and japa mala in another, and the third hand in the varada (boon-giving) mudra. When she produced musical sounds from her veena, all humans received the gift of speech (vani). Lord Brahma declared her as Sarasvati, the goddess of learning.
According to the scriptures, the Supreme Lord Krishna, being pleased with Goddess Sarasvati, gave her the boon: "You will be worshipped on the day of Vasanta Panchami."
The Appearance of Spring
On this day, gold comes from the Earth as crops begin to grow. In the fields, yellow mustard flowers blossom, and the beauty of nature blossoms more and more. Old leaves fall from the trees and are replaced by adorable pink blossoms. People celebrate by wearing yellow-colored clothes and preparing yellow-colored sweets. Yellow becomes the color of affection and joy on this day.
Vasant Panchami in Vrindavan
Jayadeva Gosvami mentions the Vasant Rasa in the Gita Govinda. This Rasa Lila was performed by Lord Krishna with His beloved gopis in the spring season near Govardhana Hill. On Vasant Panchami, at the beginning of spring, the Supreme Lord Krishna goes to Govardhana, and Chandra Deva (the moon god) comes with his full splendor, feeling proud to be born in the lunar dynasty of Krishna. In this ethereal dance, the exchange of transcendental love happened between Krishna and His greatest devotees, the gopis and Srimati Radharani.
By the excuse of setting the flower anklet of Radharani, Krishna placed Her lotus feet upon His head. The Lord who is the cause of all causes, the controller of all demigods and the entire cosmic creation — He is under the control of His pure devotees. He serves all His devotees, and all the pastimes He performs are only for the happiness of His devotees.
Celebration in ISKCON
As stated in the Bhakti-rasamrita-sindhu by Srila Rupa Gosvami: "The festivals given by the previous acharyas should be celebrated." This is the Vaishnava principle. We celebrate this festival to perform special service to Lord Krishna and to fulfill our spiritual desires.
On this auspicious day of Vasanta Panchami, we should give up all worldly pleasures and completely surrender to the lotus feet of Lord Krishna. By serving Krishna and His devotees, we should endeavor to grow in our spiritual life through the path of Seva and Sadhana.
Conclusion
Vasant Panchami is a festival of knowledge, spring, and new beginnings. It reminds us that just as the Earth blossoms with new life in spring, our spiritual lives can also blossom when we surrender to Krishna and take shelter of His devotees. May Goddess Sarasvati bless us with the wisdom to understand our eternal relationship with Lord Krishna.
