Historical Background
Ekadashi, the eleventh day of both the waxing and waning moon, has been observed as a day of fasting and increased devotion since time immemorial. The Padma Purana and other scriptures glorify this day as "Hari-vasara" — the day of Lord Hari. Lord Krishna declares in the Bhagavad-gita, "Among days I am Ekadashi."
Spiritual Significance
Observing Ekadashi helps control the senses and mind, making it easier to focus on Krishna. Fasting on this day is said to destroy all sins and bring one closer to the Lord. Even broken observance gives great benefit.
