A scriptural breakdown of the six categories of avatars (incarnations) of the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna.
Purusha, Lila & Guna Avatars
• 1. Purusha avataras: The three primary expansions of Vishnu: Karanodakashayi Vishnu (causal ocean), Garbhodakashayi Vishnu (universal ocean), and Kshirodakashayi Vishnu (ocean of milk).
• 2. Lila avataras: Pastime incarnations mentioned in Srimad-Bhagavatam (Kumaras, Narada, Varaha, Matsya, Yajna, Nara-Narayana, Dattatreya, Rsabha, Nrsimha, Kurma, Dhanvantari, Mohini, Vamana, Ramachandra, Vyasa, Balarama, Krishna, Buddha, Kalki).
• 3. Guna avataras: Controlling deities of the three modes of material nature: Vishnu (goodness/maintenance), Brahma (passion/creation), and Shiva (ignorance/destruction).

• 5. Yuga avataras: The Lord appears in different colors across the four yugas (Bg 10.8.13):
- Satya yuga: White avatara (meditation).
- Treta yuga: Red avatara (fire sacrifice).
- Dvapara yuga: Dark avatara (Krishna - temple worship).
- Kali yuga: Yellow avatara (Chaitanya Mahaprabhu - congregational chanting).
