In Vedic scriptures, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Sri Krishna, descends in various forms to perform divine pastimes, protect His devotees, and re-establish the principles of religion. These descents are called avatars. According to the teachings of Srila Prabhupada and the Gosvamis, these avatars are classified into six distinct categories.
1. Purusha-avataras
These are the primary creative incarnations of the Lord for the manifestation and maintenance of the material universes. They are three in number:
• Karanodakasayi Vishnu (Maha- Vishnu): Lies in the Causal Ocean and exhales millions of universes from His body pores.
• Garbhodakasayi Vishnu: Enters into each individual universe, lies on the Garbhodaka Ocean, and produces Lord Brahma from His lotus navel.
• Kshirodakasayi Vishnu: Enters into the heart of every living entity as the Paramatma (Supersoul) and resides in the ocean of milk.
2. Lila-avataras
These are the pastime incarnations who appear in different yugas to display specific, sweet, or heroic pastimes. Examples include Lord Matsya (the fish), Lord Kurma (the tortoise), Lord Varaha (the boar), Lord Nrsimhadeva (the half-man half-lion), Lord Vamanadeva (the dwarf), and Lord Ramachandra.
3. Guna-avataras
These are the incarnations who control the three modes of material nature (gunas):
• Lord Brahma: Empowers the mode of passion (rajo-guna) for the secondary creation of the universe.
• Lord Vishnu: Controls the mode of goodness (sattva-guna) for the preservation of the universe.
• Lord Shiva: Controls the mode of ignorance (tamo-guna) for the eventual destruction of the universe.

4. Manvantara-avataras
These incarnations appear during the reign of each Manu (the progenitor of mankind). In one day of Brahma (14 Manvantaras), there are 14 corresponding Manvantara-avataras who maintain universal peace. Examples include Yajna, Vibhu, Satyasena, and Hari.
5. Yuga-avataras
These incarnations appear in each of the four yugas to establish the specific yuga-dharma (the religious process for that age):
• Satya-yuga: Appears in a white color to establish meditation (dhyana).
• Treta-yuga: Appears in a red color to establish fire sacrifices (yajna).
• Dvapara-yuga: Appears in a dark blue color to establish deity worship (archanam).
• Kali-yuga: Appears in a yellow/golden color (Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu) to establish the congregational chanting of the holy names (Sankirtana).

These are living entities (jivas) who are specially empowered by the Supreme Lord with a specific portion of His potencies to execute a particular mission. Examples include Narada Muni (empowered with devotion), Vyasadeva (empowered with scriptural knowledge), the Four Kumaras (empowered with celibacy), Lord Buddha (empowered with compassion), and Maharaja Prithu (empowered with ruling capacity).
