Why an exalted devotee like Queen Kunti asked Lord Krishna to keep putting her into dangerous and difficult situations.
Devotional Sentiment in Adversity
Queen Kunti, the mother of the five Pandava brothers, underwent great sufferings throughout her life. Despite the reversals, Kunti kept her faith in Sri Krishna. She never prayed for a peaceful life, nor did she challenge Krishna. After the battle of Kurukshetra, she prayed:
"I wish that all those calamities would happen again and again so that we could see You again and again, for seeing You means that we will no longer see repeated births and deaths." ~ Srimad-Bhagavatam 1.8.25
Difficult Situations Stimulate Love
To increase His devotees' love, Krishna sometimes puts them into difficult situations. When facing difficulties, the pure devotee completely surrenders to Krishna. On encountering the Lord's loving reciprocation, the devotee's love increases many times. Devotees realize that all past difficulties were blessings because the Lord was protecting them. The pain of calamity is insignificant compared to the pain of separation from the Lord.
Real Protection: Consciousness of Krishna
Krishna's protection may not always come in the form of protection of the physical body. Practicing devotees understand that the body is temporary. Real protection is the protection of our consciousness — of our devotional faith and remembrance of Krishna. Devotees solely engaged in Narayana's service never fear any condition of life.
