Deities Pilgrimage Temples

A comprehensive guide to the sacred 108 Divya Desams (Divine Abodes of Lord Vishnu) sung by the 12 Alvars.

Origins & The Twelve Alvars

The concept of the 108 Divya Desam finds its roots in the Alvars, 12 mystic saints who lived between the 6th and 9th centuries CE. They composed thousands of devotional hymns (Nalayira Divya Prabandham) extolling the abodes of Lord Vishnu:
1. Poigai Alvar: Incarnation of Vishnu's conch (born in Kanchipuram).
2. Bhoothath Alvar: Incarnation of Vishnu's mace (born in Mahabalipuram).
3. Pey Alvar: Incarnation of Vishnu's sword (born in Mylapore).
4. Thirumalisai Alvar: Incarnation of Vishnu's discus (born in Thirumalisai).
5. Nammalvar: Prominent Tamil saint, composed the Thiruvaimozhi.
6. Madhurakavi Alvar: Devotee of Nammalvar.
7. Kulasekara Alvar: King from Kerala, incarnation of the Kaustubha gem.
8. Periyalvar: Personification of Garuda (born in Srivilliputhur).
9. Andal: The sole female Alvar, composed the Thiruppavai.
10. Thondaradippodi Alvar: Symbol of the garland of Vishnu.
11. Thiruppaan Alvar: Representation of the Srivatsa mark.
12. Thirumangai Alvar: Warrior, incarnation of Vishnu's bow.

The Seven Zones & Self-Manifested Shrines

The 108 Divyadesams are divided geographically into 7 categories:
• Thondainaadu — 22 temples (South India)
• Chozhanaadu — 40 temples (South India)
• Nadunaadu — 2 temples (South India)
• Pandiyanaadu — 18 temples (South India)
• Malayaalanaadu — 13 temples (South India)
• Vadanaadu — 11 temples (North India & Nepal)
• Vinnulagam — 2 abodes outside the earthly realm (Thiruparkadal & Sri Vaikuntham)

There are eight **SwayamVyaktha** (self-revealing, unsculpted) kshetrams where the Lord revealed Himself: Badrikashramam, Salagramam, Naimisaranyam, Pushkaram, Tirumala (Tirupathi), Srirangam, Srimushnam, and Thothadri.

Postures and Statewise Distribution

In these shrines, Lord Vishnu is found in various postures (Thirukkolam):
• Kidantha Thirukkolam (Sleeping Posture) — 27 temples
• Veetrirundha Thirukkolam (Sitting Position) — 21 temples
• Nindra Thirukkolam (Standing Position) — 60 temples

The Lord faces East in 79 temples, West in 19, North in 3, and South in 7. Undertaking a pilgrimage to these sites is believed to cleanse sins and foster deep spiritual awakening.
